Green treats for St. Patty’s Day

shamrockWe’re having several families over on Saturday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. While my husband is in charge of snacks for the adults, I’m going to have fun making green goodies for the kids.  Here are some things I’ve come up with:

Green pancakes – an excellent breakfast treat and a fun way to start the day. Try adding slices of green kiwi fruit to the top of the pile!

Green popcorn – Pop the corn, melt a little butter and clear syrup with green food coloring, then drizzle the mixture over the popcorn and stir.

Green Rice Krispy Treats – follow the recipe on the box, but add some green food coloring to the melted mixture.

Make Pickle People or Green Pepper People – chop up a bunch of vegetables, get out nuts, raisins, dried cranberries… and using a large bell pepper or dill pickle, tooth picks or glue, make a person. (Remember Mr. Potato Head when you were a kid?)

Green mashed potatoes – If all your kids will eat is chicken nuggets (I’ve been there), give them some green mashed potatoes with their meat. (A few drops of green food coloring in with the milk works wonders.)

Sugar cookies with green sprinkles or green cupcakes – These are fun to have the kids help you make and decorate. They’ll have a good time and be proud of their creations.

And make a game out of naming all the green fruits and veggies you can think of (beans, broccoli, kale, lentils, peas, celery, lettuce, brussel sprouts, artichokes, sugar snap peas, Swiss chard, spinach, peppers, avocado, kiwi fruit, grapes, green pears, limes, honeydew melon, Granny Smith apples, green bananas…). The winner gets a broccoli bouquet and a dollar bill (it’s green!)

Feel free to add any of your own suggestions to this list.
