Smoke alarms

smoke-alarmDid you remember to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you changed your clocks last weekend? (I do them together, so that if I remember to do one, I’ll remember to do the other, too.) All smoke alarms in your house should be tested once a month. Even if you set them off regularly with burnt toast, you need to get into the habit of testing. Batteries need to be replaced at least once a year.

Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms in the home are considered one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire. Smoke alarms save lives. They prevent injuries and minimize property damage by helping residents detect fires early in their development. Several studies have concluded that when working smoke alarms are present, the chance of dying from the fire is cut in half.

At least one smoke alarm should be placed on every level of the home. The most important location is near the bedrooms to provide an early warning to all sleeping occupants. Practice a fire drill with your children so that they are familiar with the sound of the smoke alarm and know what to, where to go.

Most have good intentions of checking our smoke alarms and changing the batteries, but often we forget. A new free website has just launched – where you can enroll to receive a reminder by email or text message to check/test your alarms, change the batteries and change the alarms when they reach their replacement date.

This is a free service and could save your life. I encourage you to visit this website and enroll for your free reminders.
