MOD responds to Ther-Rx

In the past few weeks, there has been a torrent of concern over the availability of progesterone therapy for women hoping to prevent premature birth.  We have held discussions with physician groups, various organizations and the manufacturer of the drug.  Ther-Rx Corporation’s handling of the launch of Makena, and the initial list price, were extremely disappointing and unacceptable to the March of Dimes and the families we represent.  While Ther-Rx Corporation’s decision yesterday to reduce the list price of Makena to $690 and to expand patient financial assistance are steps in the right direction toward making an FDA-approved progesterone therapy product more widely available, it’s not enough.  The March of Dimes has decided to exercise our right to terminate our current contract and sever all professional relationships with Ther-Rx.

The March of Dimes will continue to explore all options for ensuring access to progesterone therapy for all medically eligible women. Access for women to treatment to prevent premature birth is and always has been our paramount concern. We hope that the controversy surrounding Makena has helped raise awareness that progesterone therapy is a safe and effective treatment for prevention of preterm birth and that more obstetricians will consider it for appropriate patients.

I had the 17P shot when I was pregnant with my last child, and the shot worked wonders for me. I lost 2 children due to premature birth, then had my oldest son at 24 weeks gestation. He is now a healthy 7 year old. When I got pregnant with my youngest son the OB/GYN sent me to a Specialist. They talked to me about the 17P Shot. I decided to start it, because it was the only chance I would have to stay pregnant, and experience a full term pregnancy. Which was amazing!! It was the best decision I made. I had my youngest a little early at 35 weeks 6 days, but not nearly as early as my other children!! He is now a Healthy 3 1/2 year old! All I have to say is thank you March of Dimes for all that you do. You are the ones that made it possible for me to have my wonderful children! Thank you!! Lori and Family

It is refreshing to see an organization like MOD take a strong stand against these horrific business practices. I’m so pleased, that I will be making a donation to MOD this afternoon. While it won’t begin to make up for what is lost by severing your Ther-Rx contract; I hope that it encourages your leadership that this was a brave decision that will be commended and rewarded!

Thank you ladies for your kind words of support. We will continue to do our best to find the causes of pretmature birth and a way to seriously decrease the number of them.

Lori – I’m so glad to hear that 17P worked for you and that both your boys are doing well!

I can’t believe Ther-Rx Corp and KV Pharmaceutical would take advantage of something soo important. Profiting from holding our kids hostage… taking something so essential and profiting from it playing on our fears… someone or some people are going to answer for their evil deeds… Their will be justice. This was intentional and malicious to a gross degree and I hope these people are made an example of by our court system so as to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Buying up the rights to something that could save the lifes of a premature infants knowing that it is essential for survival and marking up the price by 10000% because of how essential it is… I call it a knowing and intenional assault against women and children everywhere. The steps they’ve taken are to remedy the situation are empty and pitiful at best. This brings to question the ownership of rights to live saving medical breakthroughs… I believe no one should be able buy up the rights to something that could save somones life and mark up the price because they know people will die without it… this is a hostage situation of the grandest scale if I’ve ever seen one.
