Trimming baby’s nails

Friday, October 16th, 2009

19168348_thbI couldn’t believe how long my daughter’s finger nails were! She was less than a week old and desperately needed them trimmed. When she was fed and calm I got the clippers out and placed her on the changing table. Although meant for babies, the clippers were enormous compared to her. The lighting seemed OK. I picked up her delicate little hand and started with the pointer finger. I pressed her tiny finger pad away from the nail and started to cut along the curve of her finger. Then she SCREAMED! OH MY! WHAT DID I DO? She was bleeding. I nicked her precious little finger. My heart dropped. I grabbed a nearby cloth diaper and applied pressure . “I’m a horrible mother,” I thought.

Since then, I’ve been using an emery board to file her nails to the right length. I’m too scared to pick up the clippers again. I’ve been tempted to peel or bite them at times, but worry about ripping the nail too low and not being able to see what I’m doing. Filing is a bit time consuming, but at least I know she can’t get hurt this way.

Do you have any recommendations or stories to share? We can all learn from each other, so feel free to leave a comment.

Have a terrific weekend and thanks for stopping by NMN!

Recall: Workshop sets and trucks from Little Tikes; choking hazard

Friday, August 14th, 2009

plastic-nailsThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of toy workshop sets and trucks from the company Little Tikes.

The toys have large, plastic toy nails that are a choking hazard. The nails are red and blue in color. Anyone who owns these toys should stop using them immediately.

The nails are about 3 inches long and about 1 inch wide (see the image that accompanies this post).

Can I get my nails done once I’m pregnant?

nail-polishI know a lot of women who get their nails done every week.  I never really got into it, but they love it and wouldn’t miss this treat.  Manicures and pedicures are great ways to relax, especially when there is a little massage thrown in. But they may not be the best choice for pampering yourself while pregnant. Your nails may change a lot during your pregnancy:
• They may grow faster.
• They may be thicker and stronger, or become softer.
• They may become brittle, split and break more easily.
If your nails split, keep them neatly trimmed. Avoid nail polish and nail polish remover. Your skin can absorb the strong chemicals in these products, and you can breathe them in. If the smell of polish and remover is strong in your salon or spa, it’s probably best not to spend too much time there while you’re pregnant. If your nails are in good shape and you have a special event coming up, try doing your own nails at home in a well ventilated room.
