The month of May is full of important observances, many related to women and women’s health. For example, Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week runs from May 4th to May 10th and National Women’s Health Week (NWHW) runs from May 10th to May 16th. But the most well-known and probably most celebrated observance is Mother’s Day (May 10th).
That’s why in honor of this very special holiday, March of Dimes has launched It Starts With Mom–– an online resource center designed with moms and moms-to-be. It Starts With Mom aims to inform and educate on health and wellness issues, and empower moms and moms-to-be to plan for the best possible start for their families.
The United States is facing an urgent maternal and infant health crisis and now we are in the midst of a global pandemic that is affecting women who want to become pregnant or already are. Too many women are dying from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. This is especially true for women of color. In this country, more Black and American Indian/Alaska Native women die from health problems related to pregnancy than white women. We must do more to support moms and encourage all women to discuss concerns or issues they have about their health before, during and after pregnancy directly with their providers.
March of Dimes is committed to leveling the playing field for all moms and babies, no matter their age, socio-economic background, demographics or situation. It Starts With Mom provides easy-to-access to health and wellness information and resources, covering topics related to maternal health which includes the pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and postpartum stages of the motherhood journey. Join us and our partners on May 7th starting at 12:30PM EST for our #ItStartsWithMom virtual event on Facebook Live, hosted by Jessica Alba!
