The Fourth of July seems to be when summer barbecues abound. Grills get fired up and freezers are stocked with popsicles. It’s always great to kick back and relax, but remember to stay away from alcohol if you’re pregnant, trying to get pregnant or if you think you’re pregnant.
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy increases your baby’s chances of premature birth, birth defects, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (also called FASDs), low birthweight, among other complications. Drinking any amount of alcohol at any time during pregnancy can harm your baby’s developing brain and other organs. No amount of alcohol has been proven safe at any time during pregnancy.
Here are some tips to help you avoid alcohol during pregnancy:
- Plan to drink other things, like fruit-infused water, sparkling water or plain water.
- Use a fun straw or put an umbrella in the glass to make it seem more festive.
- Tell your partner and your friends and family that you’re not drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Ask them to help and support you.
- If you need help to stop drinking, talk to your health care provider. He can help you find resources to help you stop.
